Hummingbirds are one of those little pieces of summer that are almost impossible not to stop and watch. They are tiny, impossibly fast, and then suddenly perfectly still in the air.
For this painting, I wanted everything else to fall away and let the hummingbird have the entire page. I love the tiny details in the feathers, the soft pinks and greens that appear when you really look, and that beautiful flash of violet at the throat of the black-chinned hummingbird.
There is something I love about painting wildlife this way. No elaborate landscape or background, just the animal and all the small details that make it extraordinary.
