The Nights Embrace
This original watercolor painting is part of my Year of the Fire Horse series, a body of work exploring transformation, intuition, and the evolving relationship between human spirit and the forces of change.
Painted on BFK paper, this 20 × 25 inch piece portrays Night in a maternal and spiritual form, stepping into a role of guidance and protection as time moves forward. Here she embodies the archetypal presence of mother, matron, and Madonna, holding both strength and tenderness as she prepares for the Fire Horse to enter the world.
In this moment, Night does not control the force beside her. Instead, she embraces it. The Fire Horse glows with warmth and light, representing the powerful energy of transformation that must eventually be released into the world. Her gesture reflects care, wisdom, and readiness—an acknowledgment that change must be nurtured before it can run freely.
The painting carries a sense of reverence and illumination. Hand-applied gold leaf stars scatter across the sky, while a rose gold leaf moon glows behind the figures, creating a luminous celestial halo that highlights their connection. These metallic elements catch and reflect light, enhancing the sacred and mythic atmosphere of the piece.
With expressive watercolor washes and radiant color, the work reflects themes of creation, protection, and the maternal wisdom required to usher change into the world.
