The Caterpillar

$250.00

For West of Wonderland, I wanted the Caterpillar to feel less like a character sitting on a mushroom and more like the strange, hazy spirit of the landscape itself.

She moves through a forest of evergreens and cannabis, almost disappearing into it, with her dress, hair, and the plants all becoming part of one another. I wanted her to feel ethereal and a little psychedelic, a nod to the colorful haze and dreamlike weirdness that has always surrounded the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. The cannabis leaves bring that idea firmly into Colorado, while the wildflowers, forest, and tiny details make her part of the Western Slope.

Like the rest of West of Wonderland, this piece takes something familiar from Wonderland and asks what it might have become if the story had started here.

The Caterpillar is an original 11 × 14 inch watercolor and colored pencil drawing, created with layers of watercolor and detailed colored pencil work.

It is also available in three small, limited-edition print sizes: 8 × 10, 11 × 14, and 16 × 20 inches. Once each edition is gone, it will not be reprinted.

Available as: Original Watercolor + Colored Pencil • 11 × 14 inches | Limited Edition Prints • 8 × 10, 11 × 14, and 16 × 20 inches
