Noel found the Christmas tree before anyone had a chance to decorate it.
This watercolor painting features a little black bear tucked into the branches of an evergreen, surrounded by colorful ornaments, tiny blossoms, golden details, and little oranges. At the very top sits a simple gold star, although Noel seems pretty convinced that she is the real decoration.
I wanted this piece to feel like Christmas in the mountains: a little wild, colorful, imperfect, and full of unexpected magic. Instead of separating the landscape from the traditions we bring into our homes, Noel becomes part of the tree itself.
There is something wonderfully innocent about a baby bear climbing somewhere she probably shouldn’t be. Noel is my little celebration of that curiosity, wrapped up in pine needles, color, gold, and Christmas.
