For my West of Wonderland series, I wanted the Queen of Hearts to feel less like the villain we know and more like a woman who belongs to this landscape. Strong, wild, a little untouchable, and very much the queen of her own world.
She stands beside an old twisted juniper, her dress growing into the wildflowers around her, with a crown that feels almost grown rather than worn. The heart hidden in the branches was one of my favorite details to add. There are little pieces of Wonderland here, but they’ve been tangled up with the plants, colors, and wildness of the Western Slope.
Like the rest of West of Wonderland, this piece is about taking characters we know and imagining that maybe Wonderland was here all along.
The Queen of Hearts is an original 11 × 14 inch watercolor and colored pencil drawing, created with layers of watercolor and detailed colored pencil work.
It is also available in three small, limited-edition print sizes: 8 × 10, 11 × 14, and 16 × 20 inches. Once each edition is gone, it will not be reprinted.
