I call this painting my color wheel, but it also has another name: The Wheel of Fortune.
I have always loved old artist color wheels. There is something beautiful about seeing color organized into a circle and realizing that nearly every color, combination, and possibility begins there. But while I was creating this piece, I kept coming back to the Wheel of Fortune card in Tarot and its ideas of cycles, change, movement, and perspective.
That felt very connected to making art. The colors may stay the same, but what we do with them changes. Shift your perspective, move something beside something else, add light or take it away, and suddenly you see something completely different. Art is constantly asking us to look again.
So it became both: my color wheel and my Wheel of Fortune.
The original is a 20 × 20 inch watercolor painting with an intricate Art Nouveau inspired design finished by hand with gold leaf.
It is also available in three small, limited-edition print sizes: 8 × 8, 11 × 11, and 16 × 16 inches. Each print is individually hand finished with gold leaf by me, so every piece is slightly different.
