There is something about Nesta that I have always loved. She is difficult, stubborn, angry, and sometimes incredibly hard to understand. But beneath all of that is a woman who has carried so much and is still trying to figure out who she is.
Inspired by Nesta from A Court of Thorns and Roses, I wanted this painting to be about more than her character. I wanted it to represent the strength we find in ourselves through the things we have endured. The parts of us that aren't always pretty or easy to love, but are just as important to who we are becoming.
Throughout history, women who were different, outspoken, or unwilling to conform were often met with fire. I wanted Nesta to feel as though she was emerging from those flames, not burned by them, but forged into something stronger. A reminder that we don't have to soften ourselves or become smaller to make other people comfortable.
I loved allowing the watercolor to move through deep blacks, warm oranges, reds, and soft pinks, almost like a wildfire moving through a field of wildflowers. The delicate botanical silhouettes grow through the darker washes, representing the beautiful things that can emerge from even the most difficult experiences. Her elaborate mask is finished with variegated and chrome silver leaf, adding light and texture to the painting.

The original painting is 22 × 30 inches, created in watercolor on Arches watercolor paper, with hand-applied variegated and chrome gold leaf.
