The Grand Mesa Mermaid
The Mermaid of the Grand Mesa rests beneath a towering ponderosa pine, nestled on the island in the middle of Island Lake. By her side lounges a marmot—one of the mesa’s charming local residents—soaking up the sun on a warm boulder. Affectionately known as “whistle pigs” for their sharp, whistling calls, these curious creatures are a familiar and beloved part of the landscape.
She’s surrounded by a vibrant array of alpine wildflowers: fiery Indian paintbrush, soft fireweed, and delicate Rocky Mountain columbines. Her bra is made from the blue and white columbines—Colorado’s state flower—adding a graceful and symbolic touch. In the background, a moose wanders peacefully through the scene, representing the moose population introduced to the area in the early 2000s, now thriving in this high-country habitat.
In the distance, the Grand Mesa—the largest flat-topped mountain in the world—stretching across the horizon. Encircling the image are colorful aspen leaves, a tribute to the mesa’s breathtaking autumn displays, where the trees light up the landscape in shades of gold, orange, and crimson.
