Lily Cain Studio Watercolor painting of Pink and White waterlilies minimal contemporary artwork

Born and raised in San Diego, CA.

I learned to love nature through the ocean and what it would bring in the tides.

Materially, I’m a bit of a magpie – collecting things that I like for my watercolor paintings and pencil drawings. The craft of my work engages the history of American Folk and folklore, using it to celebrate the construction and complexity of the female.

I gather the my own photos and objects that I am attracted to and create a botanical ecosystem that my work is created out of. Flowers, wildlife, insects, seashells - you name it.

I was trained in the formal techniques of Printmaking and Painting --- which has evolved into making small sculptural pieces using butterflies, moths and found imagery while maintaining my fundamental skills in the traditional mediums.

Being a printmaker and a fine art painter is important to me. It allows me use my strengths of being methodical and detailed oriented to create structure. I’ve learned it’s not just a medium of how to make work, but a process that allows you to develop your practice outside the lines.

be wild like a flower and focused like a bee.
